Indonesian Armed Forces Commander and Defense Minister Strengthen Defense Cooperation with Vietnam

SUARA NEGERI | JAKARTA — In an effort to strengthen defense ties between Indonesia and Vietnam, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin paid a courtesy call on Vietnamese Defense Minister H.E. General Phan Van Giang in Hanoi on July 30, 2025.

The meeting was part of concrete steps to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries in the military and defense sectors.

The event began with the laying of wreaths at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum as a tribute to Vietnam's great leader. The official welcoming ceremony at the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense headquarters signified the seriousness of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, followed by bilateral meetings and concluded with a state luncheon.

During the bilateral meeting, the two defense ministers exchanged views on the current geopolitical situation, both in the region and globally. The Indonesian Defense Minister emphasized the importance of ASEAN solidarity amid the increasingly complex global dynamics.

As a result of the upgraded relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March, the two defense ministers agreed on the need to enhance military and defense cooperation in various fields, including delegation exchanges at all levels, such as military education, logistics, medical, and defense industry (Indhan), as well as cooperation in UN Peacekeeping Missions.

This visit marks a promising new chapter in the growing defense partnership between Indonesia and Vietnam, in line with the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and global peace.(*)
